Tannery

Leather has been important for clothing, shoes, horse equipment, when equipping an army, and on the "catwalk" in Paris.

It is a traditional craft where hides and skins are processed for various uses.

Many had this as a hobby. Gradually, as the tanners also found new markets outside of Osterøy, this was for a while the industry that sold the largest values. The different tanneries had their specialties.

The last tannery shut down operations just a few years ago. Borge Tannery had then supplied leather both for shoe production at Clarks and to large fashion houses, such as Louis Vuitton in Paris.
