Wood

The forest has provided timber and shelter for people and animals, materials for travel, fuel, feed for the animals, dye for textiles, raw material for medicine, and bark to use in bread in times of crisis.

Most of the forest on Osterøy was deciduous and many had to fetch house timber from the mainland, where pine grew.

People looked after the forest and had great knowledge about what the different wooden skulls are used for. No tree was sawed down before it had grown.

Those who had plenty of wood to spare transported it to Bergen to be sold.
