Sweater constructions made simple
Class teacher: Dario Tubiana
Have you ever found yourself asking, “Why the short rows?” or “Where exactly am I supposed to pick up these stitches?” Or maybe you’ve had that moment of panic when a pattern suddenly stops making sense? If so, this workshop is definitely for you.
Sweater Constructions Made Simple is the result of years of teaching Textile Design at a fashion university and working as a knitwear designer in both the hand-knitting and industrial worlds. I’ve gathered loads of technical material, practical insights, and simplified methods to make sweater design feel accessible, logical, and—most importantly—fun.
This class is designed for knitters who want to truly understand how sweaters are built. We’ll explore sweater architecture, learning why certain construction choices are made and how to adapt them to your own style and fit. You’ll get to know the main types of constructions—set-in sleeves, drop shoulders, and back shoulder shaping—as well as sweaters worked in the round, like yoked and raglan styles.
Using easy-to-follow spreadsheets provided in class, we’ll go through the key calculations together so you’ll leave knowing how each construction works, what modifications are possible, and how to approach sweater design with confidence. You’re welcome to bring a sweater you’ve made (or photos of one) if you’d like to discuss its construction or ask specific questions.
The goal? That you walk out of class not only understanding sweater design, but feeling that spark of “yes, I can absolutely do this.”
