Clothing and textiles
Before 1850, virtually all clothing and useful textiles were made at home on the farm. In the coastal villages, they also spun hemp nets for fishing trips, and made all the equipment the fishermen needed.
Clothing and textile production has been an essential part of the economy, both as part of self-salvage, but also as sale goods.
This was the women's area of responsibility, and they started their apprenticeship early. They knitted and repaired in all their spare time. Otherwise, the work with spinning and weaving was linked to fixed times in the working year.
Wool, usually from own sheep, was used for both inner and outer clothing in all forms, bedclothes and seals. It was important to have good knowledge about sorting wool so that the different qualities worked for the use they were supposed to have.
