Utstilling: historier frå den forbodne hagen

Opningstale ved bystyremedlem og tidlegare byråd for klima, miljø og byutvikling Ingrid Fjeldstad, og ein introduksjon til utstillinga ved Siren Elise Wilhelmsen.

Utstillinga viser resultat frå doktorgradsprosjektet i design Odd New Spring – Towards Emerging Landscapes and a Reorientation in Design Practice, som Wilhelmsen har utvikla ved Institutt for design, Fakultet for kunst, musikk og design, Universitetet i Bergen.

Undersøkingane tek utgangspunkt i ei gruppe framande og uønskte plantar, og omfattar eksperimentelle materialstudiar og tekstilar. Gjennom ei open og undrande tilnærming blir den rådande oppfatninga av desse plantane som skadelege artar utfordra, og forholdet til dei blir sett opp mot berekraft, produksjon, forbruk og forvaltning av naturressursar frå dei lokale landskapa.

Målet har vore å undersøke metodar og strategiar for ein stadforankra designpraksis, og designaren si rolle som formidlar og utviklar av positive framtidsscenario og berekraftig materialkultur. Plantane ber med seg forteljingar frå ulike stadar og tider, som i arbeidet vev saman fortid og framtid, og dannar eit lerret for å reflektere over samanhengar og relasjonar i notida. Forteljingar frå den forbodne hagen inviterer publikum til engasjement utover å betrakte dei fysiske objekta, og appellerer til ein ny type interaksjon med plantane og landskapa.

Utstillinga er ope onsdag-fredag frå kl. 11-15 og søndagar frå kl. 12-17.

The exhibition presents results from the PhD project in design Odd New Spring – Towards Emerging Landscapes and a Reorientation in Design Practice, which Wilhelmsen has developed at the Department of Design at the Faculty of Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen.

Wilhelmsen’s investigations are based on a group of alien and unwanted plants and consist of experimental material studies and textiles. Employing openness and wonder in her approach, the work challenges the prevailing perception of these plants as harmful and invasive species, and our relationship with them is set up against sustainability, production, consumption, and the management of natural resources from our local landscapes.

The aim has been to explore methods and strategies for a place-based design practice, and the designer’s role as a communicator and developer of positive future scenarios and sustainable material culture. The plants carry stories from different places and times, which weave together past and future in the works, and form a canvas to reflect on connections and relationships in the present. Stories from the Forbidden Garden invites the public to engage beyond considering the physical objects and appeals to a new type of interaction with the plants and landscapes.

The exhibition is open Wednesday-Friday 11-15 and Sundays 12-17.
